How it measures

Measurement Principle

The planned Model 800RS platform continuously measures H₂S and SO₂ in conditioned sulfur recovery tail gas. It calculates the H₂S-to-SO₂ ratio and can provide an air-demand or ratio-control signal. Final optical detector architecture, ranges, and validated response performance will be stated in the approved product datasheet.

Measurement Objective
Continuous H2S and SO2 measurement with real-time H2S-to-SO2 ratio calculation for Claus sulfur recovery control, trim-air optimization, and optional air-demand or ratio-control output.
Signal Outputs
The planned system provides configurable 4-20 mA outputs for H2S, SO2, ratio, and air-demand or ratio-control signals where configured. Final output count, scaling, relays, and digital interfaces are project specific.
Data Integration
The analyzer is intended for DCS or PLC integration using industrial analog and digital communications. Ratio-control logic, standard tags, alarms, historian data, and control ownership must be defined in the approved project documents.
Alarms & Diagnostics
Final concentration and ratio alarms, analyzer faults, sample-system diagnostics, calibration status, relay logic, and fail-safe behavior will be defined by the approved datasheet and ordered configuration.
Documentation

Online Analyzer Configuration

Sample System & Online Analyzer Readiness

Reliable online measurement depends on the process interface as well as the analyzer. Confirm the following application data before final configuration and quotation.

Sample Type & Phase
Conditioned gas from a Claus sulfur recovery unit tail-gas or associated tail-gas treatment process, containing H2S and SO2 and potentially water vapor, sulfur vapor, acid gases, particulates, and other process components.
Measurement Range
Provide normal, minimum, maximum, startup, and upset concentrations for H2S and SO2, the required H2S-to-SO2 ratio range, alarm limits, and any air-demand or control-output range. Final ranges remain project specific until the approved datasheet is issued.
Sample Conditions
Provide process pressure, temperature, moisture, sulfur-vapor and condensation risk, dust, oxygen, acid-gas composition, hydrocarbons, ammonia or other interferents, and startup and upset conditions.
Sample Handling
Define extraction point, probe, heated transport, filtration, temperature control, pressure and flow regulation, condensation prevention, calibration routing, sample return or safe vent, and maintenance access.
Installation Area
Confirm analyzer shelter or cabinet, heat-traced routing, ambient conditions, maintenance access, safe-area or hazardous-area classification, certification, and proximity to the control-system interface.
Utilities
Confirm electrical and heat-trace power, instrument air or purge, certified zero and span gases, calibration manifold, safe vent or return, drains where applicable, and communication cabling.
Response Requirement
Define whether the analyzer supports ratio display, main or trim-air optimization, closed-loop or advisory control, alarm response, efficiency monitoring, or trending. Final response time is configuration dependent.
Integration Requirement
Confirm 4-20 mA outputs for H2S, SO2, ratio, and air demand where required, digital communication, DCS or PLC tags, historian data, control-loop ownership, alarm logic, and fail-safe behavior.
Commissioning Requirement
