Surface and interface measurement through a gasket-mounted arrangement
Gasket-mounted surface thermocouples provide a project-specific way to measure temperature at a flange, joint, or equipment interface without installing a conventional immersed thermowell. The arrangement may be useful where process penetration is difficult, existing equipment must be adapted, or interface temperature is the measurement objective.
Suitability depends on the flange and gasket design, sealing responsibility, pressure, temperature, materials, compression, routing, mechanical loading, electrical isolation, installation procedure, and the relationship between interface temperature and the process information required.

How the measurement is approached

Does a gasket-mounted sensor measure the bulk process temperature?
Not necessarily. It measures the local interface or surface temperature. The relationship to the process temperature depends on the equipment, heat transfer, installation, and validation.
Can it be used on any flange?
No. Flange size, rating, gasket type, pressure, temperature, medium, sealing design, compression, materials, and mechanical approval must be reviewed.
Who is responsible for sealing integrity?
The project, plant, equipment owner, gasket specialist, and engineering authority must approve the final sealing and installation arrangement. The sensor design cannot be separated from that responsibility.
